That's A Wrap From the WPT DeepStacks Turlock Series

Three full days of play ended with the final five players agreeing to an equity chop, as Josh Moua took home the top cash prize of $36,341 in the 2015 WPT DeepStacks Turlock Main Event.

The $1,100 buyin drew a Turlock-record 175 entries that spanned two Day-one entries and a full 10 hours of play on the final day on May 17. There were 68 entries on May 15 for Day 1A, followed up with 107 more entries on Day 1B. Turlock Poker Room ran satellites far in advance of the series, with 95 players winning seats into the Main Event.

Dana Muse was final table chipleader 6-handed when players came back from dinner break. Moua and Adrian Bolanos clashed in a huge hand that left Bolanos out in 6th. A few hands later, with Moua having about half of all chips in play, the players agreed to chop up the prize pool, then play it out for the WPT DeepStacks prize package including an entry into the WPT DeepStacks Championship event in Calgary, Alberta.

Moua and Muse ended up heads-up for the prize package, trophy and series championship points, with Moua, from Merced, earning the trip to Canada and the series championship trophy.

I was being patient all day, my pocket aces held up and I figured that was a pretty good sign,” said Moua about his chances to run deep on the final day. “I am thinking about going to World Series (of Poker) this year so this is a pretty good start.”

Among the players who came out for the main event were WSOP bracelet winner Tristan Wade from WPT DeepStacks, Brian Devonshire - 25th in last year’s WSOP Main Event, Joe Nguyen - runner-up in the 2013 WPT Bay101 Shooting Star and former HPT Fresno Champ along with last year’s WPT DeepStacks Turlock Main Event runner-up Eric Estoque, Turlock 10th Anniversary Main Event Champ Mia Xiong and Turlock 10th Anniversary Series Champ Todd Machado.

A big clash late on Day 1A between Ed Miller and Mark Johnson – where Miller flopped top-two and Johnson flopped an open-ended straight that got there on the turn – propelled Johnson to a huge chiplead that he carried well into Sunday’s Day 2 while Miller was eliminated two from the money. Johnson, however, ended up on the wrong end of a few different hands involving Miguel Lopez and finished the day in 9th place for $3,252. Lopez was just 2 big blinds shy of Aram Alexander for the chiplead as final table play began. Lopez was eventually eliminated in 7th place ($6,170), while Alexander took 4th place money ($21,068) in the equity chop.

Cheri Svensen won Event 2, the $100 Hold’em and then capped off her series with a second-place finish in Event 8, the $150 Turbo to win the Series Championship title, earning an entry into the Turlock Poker Room Memorial Day tournament along with a variety of WPT DeepStacks-related items.

“The only reason I came tonight was to try to win the series championship,” said Svensen, who added she looked at the points standings and wanted to take one last chance to win.

Main Event players were treated to a Players Party on Saturday night, with hors d’oeurves from 10 East in Turlock, and a drawing was held with one player winning a seat in the WPT DeepStacks $300,000 guarantee later this year at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles.

The WPTDeepStacks Turlock Series drew a total of 648 entries for the 8 events. Side event winners included Floro Bayongan, who took the kickoff event, the $335 deepstack, for $10,196; Svensen in Event 2, the $100 Hold’em ($1,439); George Sandoval in Event 4, the $150 with $25 bounties ($979); Jimmy Alvarez in Event 5, the $125 Omaha 8OB ($1,762); Efrain Ayala in Event 6, the $225 with $50 bounties ($3,770) and Jose Esparza in Event 8, the $150 Turbo ($1,555).

Recent Eliminations

Among the players eliminated recently during Day 1B of the WPTDeepStacks Turlock Series Main Event are:
Brandi Boehme
Jerry Utke
Hugo Sanchez

Utke has been knocked out three times over the two days.
Sanchez has bought back in.

There is still almost 2 hours left in late registration

HeGone, SheNot

There was just all-in action on side-by-side tables and we managed to pick up most of what took place at both tables.

Hugo Chavez moved all in over a raise and two calls. The original raiser calls with A9 and sees Chavez, who is down to 10,700 chips, has A7, the boar runs out KKJ34 and Sanchez is eliminated.

At the other table we look over just in time to see and AQ being mucked from an all-in player and the AK of Dana Muse held, with the chips being swept her way. Muse, who was down to about 10,000 on first break, is now up to about 60,000

Hugo Squeezes, Doubles

Hugo Sanchez, 5th place in the 10th Anniversary Main Event last October, is in the big blind and he sees the cutoff raise to 1500, with flat calls from the button and small blind.

Sanchez has an additional 8700 behind if he calls, but he puts all the chips in the middle instead. He can almost double up without a call, but after more than a minute, he does get a call from the player in the small blind who says it is going to be a weak call.

Sanchez has A♠5♠ while the SB has Q♣T♥.

The board runs our 6-5-8-3-J and Sanchez moves up to 24,225

Jashti Gets Roughed Up

Jashti Kumar sees a player move all-in in front of him for about 12,000 chips, and to his great surprise, Kumar looks down and sees he is holding AA. That was a snap-call, for sure, but seeing an 8 on the flop didn't make for a good outcome for the Thunder Valley Poker Room regular.

He did chip back up throughout the first three levels, however, and is back up to 36,750 as we get underway in Level 4, blinds of 100/200 and a 25 ante. The board shows 86 entries today, 154 total for the two days and 5 hours left in late registration.

Welcome to Day 1B of the Main Event

We kick off in 30 minutes with Day 1B of the WPT DeepStacks Turlock Series Main Event, our $1100 buyin with a $100,000 guarantee that the players absolutely destroyed.

Players start with 25,000 chips, playing 40-minute levels, with late registration open through the end of dinner break, about 8:30pm tonight. Play is scheduled to run no later than the end of Level 15, about 12:30 am. Qualifying players return at 1pm Sunday for Day 2.

There were 15 players who advanced last night from Day 1A into Sunday's Day 2, here are their names and chipcounts.

Day 1A Final Chipcounts

Here are the chipcounts for the 15 players who advanced from Day 1A in the WPT DeepStacks Turlock Main Event on to Sunday's Day 2.
We reached the hard stop of 15 players when Jerry Utke turned a straight, only to see Ed Miller catch a boat on the river.

Mark Johnson 281,700

Curtiss DeOliviera 31,200

May 15, 2015

We're Don, um, Nevermind

That's a wrap for Day 1A as we, um, uh, hold on there.

William Steadman moves all in for his last 18,900 and Jerry Utke goes over the top for his last 52,500. Frank The Bank becomes Frank The Tank as he hesitates, chirps and mucks, declaring it was a bad fold. "Watch, there will be an ace on the flop."

Steadman shows KK and Utke 33.

No Ace, but the 3♥Q♦T♦ flop smacks Utke, giving him a set. The J♣ gives Steadman a few outs, and he gets there when the card DaBank called for gets there as the A♦ pops up, filling out Broadway for Steadman .. and we continue one player away from calling it a night.

Utke slips to fewer than 35,000 chips. He won multiple satellite seats, however, so watch for him to be all in a few more times before we call it a night.

Miller Gets Some Back

Ed Miller leads out from UTG+1 for 4500, called by both Jerry Utke and Mark Johnson. The flop comes out T♣9♠6♠ and Miller checks. Utke makes it 11,000 and both players call.

The J♥ hits on the turn and Miller snap-shoves his last 44,600 into the middle. Utke asks for a count, looks over at Johnson, mumbles to himself and after about 90 seconds he tosses his cards into the muck.

Johnson takes about 50 seconds, asks again for the count, and is talking out loud whether to make the call or not. "I'm not gonna risk it," he says and tosses his cards into the muck, putting Utke on tilt.

"Are you kidding me," he exclaims. "I had QQ," he says as he leans over the table and looks over at Miller. "I would have called you if (Johnson) was not behind me."

Miller moves back up to 81,000

Miller Meltdown

60,000 chips clear of the field at the start of Level 13, Ed Miller has been on the wrong end of three big pots in the last 25 minutes, the latest taking a huge portion of his stack.

Miller flopped top two pair with KJ on a K8J board, but Mark Johnson was open-ended with 9T. Miller knew he was in trouble, said "here goes the meltdown," and moved all in on the turn when the 7 peeled off.
Johnson made the call and Miller asked "You have the straight?"
Sure enough, the 7 gave Johnson the straight, leaving Miller drawing to 4 outs.
The river was a T and Johnson moved up to more than 200,000 in chips, leaving Miller now with 58,000

Atwood Doubles

Jim Atwood moves all in for his last 32,200 chips and Roger Estrella moves in over the top for 59,900. Everyone gets out of the way until Jerry Utke in the Big Blind, who asks for a count, hesitates, and then mucks.

Atwood shows 99 and Estrella shows A♥K♦

The board runs out Q♥2♥5♠6♠Q♠ and Estrella moves 32,200 in chips over to Atwood, leaving Estrella with 13BB.

Estoque is Out, um, In, um ...

I know, a lot of Eric Estoque updates lately, but he's right in front of the Live Updates booth and he's been all in a LOT lately ... so, here we go again

All in for his final 14,800, Estoque is called by Vincent Filipinas, who turns over QQ and gets Estoque to stand up, trn over his AJ and slip in his backpack to make his exit.

The flop, however, comes out 23A and he's back in it .. or is he.

Two hands later and Estoque turns around to motion the Live Updates team over. He limps and entices the player in the 8 seat, Rodney Washburn, to raise to 8500.
Estoque pushes his newly-doubled-up stack into the middle and gets called.
Estoque turns over KK and Washburn has AQ.
The Flop is Q♦J♦7♠, but the Q♠ gives his Washburn trips, and the 3♠ closes out the night for last year's Main Event runner-up.
"I guess we're playing tomorrow again," he says into his cell phone as he walks away.

He May Not Be the Author, but ...

The flop is T♥A♦5♠ and Ed Miller calls a 3500 bet from the 2 seat, and the player in the 7 seat 3-bets to 9500, prompting a call from the 2 seat.
Miller, however, 4-bets to put the other players all-in. The 7 seat calls and the other player folds.
Miller shows AK and the shorter stack shows AJ.
The board runs out 4♠6♦ and Miller sweeps the 28,400 chips from the now-busted player.

Miller is not done getting into the action, however, as on the very next hand he's into it with Guy Davidson and Eric Estoque, and we pick up the action on the turn.

Estoque leads out for 7000 on a board of 8♥9♠J♥9♥ and Davidson moves in for 11700. Miller slides out a large stack of green 5000 chips, more than enough to put Estoque - who has 21500 left - all-in.
"Why did you have to do that, Ed," Estoque asks as he agonizes over making the call for his tournament life.
Estoque exposes A♥3♥ as he slowly moves his cards forward, finally tossing them into the muck.
Davidson turns over KJ for 2 pair, but Miller shows he flopped bottom two and turned a full house.
"Thanks for making me waste 7000, Ed," Estoque says, "Nobody else could lay that down, though?

Miller, 2nd place in the 2014 HPT Thunder Valley Main Event, is now up to about 180,000

33 Remain

We are down to 33 players with 20 minutes left in Level 10. Among the recent eliminations is Event 1 winner Floro Bayongan, who took down the $335 DeepStack for a little more than $10,000.

Updated Chipcounts

Here are chipcounts for some of the players returning from dinner break and playing Level 10, blinds of 500/1000 with 100 antes. Thanks to wptdslive.com for some of the counts.

Adrian Bolanos 127,000
Jerry Utke 109,600
Guy Davidson 81,400
Mark Johnson 62,700
Mia Xiong 52,600
Jim Atwood 48,700
Ed Miller 39,700

Floro Bayongan 4,800

Estoque Adds More

Eric Estoque is all in again, a few hands after his tripe-up, and gets a call from the player in the 2 seat, while Ed Miller in the 4 seat debates a while before he lets it go.

Estoque shows A♣T♦ and the other player Q♠J♠.

The flop of 3♠2♣7♣ doesn't scare Estoque, and the 7♦ makes it look better. The K♦ moves Estoque to more than 30,000 chips for the first time all day.

Miller says he knew the other player was in trouble, indicating he folded Q♥J♥, taking a number of the outs away.

Eric Estoque, in one of his "don't take my picture yet," moments

That Was Ugly, Ed

We arrive to see a player undershoving the flop after Ed Miller bets out to 10,000, and Miller is calling for a chop as he guesses his kicker may be too small.
The dealer counts out the other player's stack and announces it as 7,450 as the player shows A7 and Miller shows he was right as he tables A6 on a flop of 33A.
Miller gets no help when the 2♥ falls on the turn, but there is a collective groan when the 6♦ hits on the river, giving Miller not the chop he called for but a full knockout.
Miller moves up to almost 40,000.

Runner-Up Triples Up

Runner-up in last year's Main Event, Eric Estoque is all in for his tournament life, on a draw against a pair and a set.

Estoque has A♦6♦ on a flop of 8♦3♦4♣ against two players, one holding 88 and the other holding 77.
The board is the 5♥, and Estoque calls for his straight and gets it as the 2♥ falls, giving him the triple up his micro-stack needed.

Starting with 25,000 he is now back up to 15.150 after the triple.

We arrive to see John Bettencourt all in for his last 10,450 on a board of A♣4♦3♦ and he gets two callers.
The turn is 3♠ and both players check.
The 5♥ hits the river, one player checks and the other turns over A8 for two pair, but his kicker isn't good enough as the other shows AT.
Bettencourt mucks, grabs his Turlock Poker Room goodie bag and packs up for the day.

Paint No Good

Ed Miller raises from UTG+1 and is 3-bet by the player in the 1 seat. Blinds are at 75/150, Miller 4-bets it up to 2200, only to be 5-bet up to 6550.
Miller works the bet through his head, shuffles a stack of green 5000 chips in his hand, but doesn't look as though he wants to make the call.
He eventually kicks his cards over to the dealer, and the other player shows some frustration now getting a call, and he flips over KK.
Miller quietly mouths that he had JJ.

We are halfway through Level 2 and among the late arrivals are Eric Estoque - 5th place last night in Event 6, the $225 with $50 bounties - and George Sandoval, - winner of Event 4, the $150 with $25 Bounties
